The Islander is a Jeju-NU English newspaper edited and published by students. We published our first edition of the Islander in 1970 and have been in print ever since.

Over the years, the format of the Islander has changed. It first started as a monthly magazine style until 2010 when it became the current bi-weekly tabloid version. We cover news and events mostly held on-campus but we also cover major events that take place on Jeju Island, for example, the annual Tamna Culture Festival.

As our newspaper is the only student run English newspaper on Jeju Island, we try to cover news that are interesting to foreign students and professors and domestic students who feel comfortable reading in English.

Also, every year we hold the annual English Speech Contest. In the past, the contest was opened to all types of age groups and levels of English skills. For the past three year, though, the English Speech Contest has been a way for Jeju-NU students to show off their presentation skills and gain confidence in their English speaking abilities. Each year, the first place winner receives an honorary award from our school president.

We, the Islander reporters, endeavor to make our newspaper educational and informative to all our readers. Under the motto: “Correct English, True Media”, we hope to function not only as a truthful newspaper but also as a productive educational organization
