Every year, incoming students with laptops asks this question, “Do we really need to download this many software programs?”

More specifically, each year incoming freshmen have to download two to three programs before they can use the Jeju-NU’s Internet service. The programs are the anti-virus program, Virus Chaser, the security setting managing software, Net Client, and the wireless Internet program, CUVIC.

According to an employee at the university’s Information Telecommunication Center (ITC), students have to download these applications to prevent both viruses and malware infection that could result from surfing the web on campus.

However, some students expressed their dissatisfaction when their computer performance decreased over time due to constant mandatory Microsoft Windows updates required with the school software.

Bang Sung-Hun (Pre-veterinary Medicine, 2) comments, “I am not sure if it had to do with the software updates, but I have to reformat my newly bought laptop twice due to its slow performance.”

On this matter, the ITC employee stated that the update can be stopped through one’s IP address, but there is no alternative way to use the university’s Internet without downloading the said programs.
