Students and faculty have mixed feelings about safety in Jeju-NU.

According to a Jeju News article, Jeju Eastern Police Station reported that Jeju police officers perform regular voluntary patrols near the back gate entrance area of Jeju National University due to the increase of female students living on their own near campus.

It was also reported that there have been no cases of sexual assault for the past two years in the back gate entrance area. Currently 39 officers are stationed in the area and perform round the clock surveillance.

Within the university campus, the school relies on ADT CAPS, a 24/7 security system. ADT CAPS Security is in charge of monitoring the on-campus CCTV’s, along with providing guards and patrol services. ADT CAPS also manages data security services.

Security guards are also stationed during school hours both in the front and back entrances. There are also guards for the dormitories that monitor dormitory and cafeteria entrances.

Due to Jeju National University’s relatively remote location—at least 15 minutes away from the bustle of City Hall or other well-populated places—many students living on campus feel relatively isolated but also secure.

Transfer student Roh Tae-Young (Philosophy, 3) says, “There are many guards in both the front and back entrances. Also, since there are no ‘yooheung-gahs’(adult entertainment places) near campus, so I do not feel scared walk alone late at night.”

However, there are a few areas where students expressed concern. For example, many students living in the school dormitories feel that the school should improve dormitory security. Here are some recent complaints from students who wished to remain anonymous:

“The walk up to the dormitories is really dark, and sometimes the street lamps are not even turned on.”

“There is no one guarding the BTL dorm entrance on the first floor, only the basement entrance.”

“I feel that the guards in the dormitories are very lenient with who enters or leaves the building. There are cases where people use clothes hangers to get in the locked school dorms after curfew.”
