In recent years, the number of students who put off their graduation has been rapidly increasing.

The postponement of graduationlets students fulfill their graduation requirements bymaintaining their status as enrolled students under the permission of the university.These days,they are referred as ‘No Graduation’ students.

98 students in Jeju-NU applied to put off their graduations this year. In the case of four year universities,postponement of graduation including leave of absence is allowed up to a total of eight years. Students should graduate within this period.

Also, students who have exceeded the years required for completing a course of study (typically four years or eight semesters) must pay an additional one-sixth of tuition for every three credits they sign up for.

According to the Ministry of Education, the number of ‘No Graduation’ students has increased two folds, from 8,270 in 2011 to 14,975 in 2013.

Why do students intentionally put off their graduation?

A senior that applied for graduation postponement last February said, “The reason why I put off graduation is so I can try out a variety of programs to improve my chance of employment while in the middle of my job search. I did not know there was a time limit and thought that students usually can postpone graduation for a year.”

In addition, a survey taken by an employment portal site, Job Korea, on 1,100 young job applicants showed that the most common reason for graduation postponement was to allow students to enhance their resume with a total of 50.8 percent while anxiety about the future came in at 46.1 percent.
