▲ Flowers at a cemetery for Memorial Day

Memorial Day, or Hyeon Chung-Il, is a day in remembrance to the people who gave their lives to national defense and in the struggle for Korea’s independence. This year is the 60th Memorial Day of South Korea, dating back from 1956. However, nowadays Memorial Day is considered just as a holiday to people, especially the young generation.

When the siren turns on at ten in the morning June 6, you are supposed to salute in silence for a minute in sign of respect. Do not mistake the siren as an exercise drill.

In Korea, Memorial Day is a very solemn event. Government offices, corporations and even people at home hoist the South Korean flag at half-mast while others pay a visit to the National Cemetery.

Services are held at the Cemetery for the Loyal Dead all throughout Jeju Island. We must never forget these brave people and let this be a chance to thank all those who fought for and protected Korea
