Currently there are no smoking areas or facilities available on campus. Students have no choice. That’s why they smoke even in a non-smoking area or in front of entrance at various buildings. Yang Yeong-Woo, Team Manager at the Division of Facilities in Jeju-NU said, “We do not have any facilities for smoking. Actually, many complaints have come out about it.”

In these situations, students who do not smoke, suffer as they feel disgusted every time they pass smokers at the entrances. In addition, second-hand smoking is just as bad your health as regular smoking. According to a survey by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, if you are affected by second-hand smoking consistently, it increases the risk of lung cancer by 20 percent. Cigarettes not only affect the lungs but the entire body, from head to toe.

Besides, reckless smoking is the cause for other problems. One problem is that most smokers throw their cigarette butts away to the ground without a second thought.

In response, Jeju-NU has held various campaigns to make an anti-smoking, green campus by hosting an arts contest that spreads green culture. Unfortunately, if Jeju-NU does not make accommodations for smokers and their lack of facilities, all of these efforts will be in vain.

In the cases of other universities such as Korea University, Chungang University and Dongguk University, they have already created smoking facilities with set boundaries.

Therefore, Jeju-NU also has to prepare countermeasures like these universities.
