Jeju National University realizes ‘Global Teachers’ University (GTU) for Togetherness and Unity’ as it readies itself for the growing, varied cultures coming into the country.

South Korea is heading to multiculturalism. Various races have come to visit, to study and even to settle in the country. Multicultural homes begin to expand in number as the year advances. Yes, this new attempt contributes to the betterment of the country, but problems always await.

Some married friends in Korea shared stories of how often they argue with their husbands. Even worse, they opt to pack their things and leave. Cultural beliefs and practices are often, if not always, the culprit of this misunderstanding. We, students, are aware of this problem yet and ignore we doubts our capabilities. We are astonished by the immensity of problems that we declare in ourselves we could not do anything—just convincing our conscience that we are still students.

Therefore GTU, pioneered by Prof. Gwon Sang-Cheol and Prof. Go Ma-Wo of Jeju-NU, aims to gather innovation-geared students to scrutinize the problems living with multicultural families, then among the people. They believe gathering these goal-centered students will blaze up their confidence in solving these societal problems. Students who joined aim to lessen these cultural boundaries in Jeju Island. Through visiting such homes, they investigate often neglected problems living within these homes; then they conceptualize possible solutions with the group. Moreover, publising articles about multiculturalism in Jeju is planned as to inform other citizens about the matter.

Foreign students are cordially invited to collaborate and help their fellow foreigners to adapt the life in Korea. At this point, the group is focused on multicultural issues—a problem perceived to have started blooming and therefore, in need of urgent action.

Fortunately, through GTU, we do not have to be limited by our position as “just students” to create a better society. As students, we have the chance to prevent immerging problems from growing.

Dare to improve our world starting around us. Aspire to join the University’s GTU for Togetherness and Unity and say with us, “We students, amidst our diversity, together and in unity, let us weave the cultural gaps among us!”
