The Jeju Peace Monument Steer Committee decided to erect a peace monument in front of the Consulate-General of Japan in Jeju in order to bring to light the comfort women issue. However on November 27, it was announced that the construction site will be moved to Bangil-ri Neighborhood Park. Jeju Special Self-Governing Province rejected this plan because the construction site would have been too close to the Consulate-General of Japan.

The Jeju Peace Monument Steer Committee is organized by 20 student councils including Jeju-NU Student Council, Jeju-NU Girl’s Student Council and various student councils and organizations.

In order to build the peace monument successfully, it requires a lot of support from the people of Jeju. Currently, by efforts from a number of students in Jeju, the committee raised around 13 million of the 33 million won of the total funds. Due to friction with the government, it took the committee a long time to collect the funds.

There is still a need for an additional 20 million won in funding. Also, the Jeju Peace Monument Steer Committee is currently recruiting new members.
