Thanks to the remarkable and striking development of technology, people are now living life at the highest level, which no man in the human history has ever experienced. The most visible evidence of this is the smartphone. Unlike the times of the early digital age when people were only able to communicate using one-way communication, people nowadays are free from time and spatial restraints. Development of mass media has brought a new information revolution and by that people are not only able to receive abundant information and high quality knowledge, but are also able to fulfill their entertainment needs.

Unfortunately, even though the smartphone has been invented to make life more convenient, this does not mean that it only provides positive effects for us. Currently, smartphones are being used more widely than when they were introduced, so, it is no exaggeration to say that its side effects are rampant in our society. After the so-called ‘latent period’, smartphones have started causing serious problems, both in internal and external ways.

The most notable problem is health issues. As more things are possible and done by smartphones, the more people cannot take their hands off of them. People are always with their gadgets, like they are a part of their bodies. Due to excessive and indiscriminate usage, people are suffering from pains in different parts of their bodies. Most users have experienced of backaches, pain in the neck or wrists, and mostly bleary red eyes from continuous staring at the small bright screen.

As well as health issues, mental issues brought by smartphone addiction are also becoming serious in our society. Smartphones include entertainment functions along with convenient ones. Positive views are on the fact that smartphones provide recreational amusements, refreshing our daily routine. However over fascination on this function has distorted its initial purpose and began to effect users’ lives.

No different from drugs and chemicals that cause physical disorder, smartphone addiction is a type of mental disorder. This habitual addiction is forcing users to form a psychological dependency, making them nervous and anxious when they do not have a smartphone in their hands. What was invented to make life convenient is contradictorily wasting our lives.

We have reached a milestone in the age of smartphones. Despite the fundamental flaws mentioned above, there is no doubt that smartphones are inseparable from our modern life. This means the negatives of the smartphone can only be solved by educating ourselves about correct usage. Users have to realize and self-reflect on their own propensity of smartphone habits and addiction. Most importantly, the smartphone users should always be aware that we need smartphones to control our life, not to be controlled.
