Wherever one may walk, one will see roadsides covered in red leaves tinted with yellow and orange, as if they were pieces of art lovingly dyed in multiple colors by the artist’s hand. Everywhere you look, the campus is adorned in splashes of red, orange, and yellow, among the evergreens. As we savor the beauty of the season, I wish to remind all of us that the world we live in is fragile, and we all have a part to play in protecting it. We are living on a beautiful island that boasts amazing natural sceneries and clean air.

Before I came to Jeju three years ago, I heard much about it being known as the Hawaii of Korea, the ultimate honeymoon destination, and the best place for healing and recuperation. But as we all know, Jeju has undergone much development in recent years. We are losing cultural and natural heritage, and the air is not as clean as it was decades ago. Many will remember the snowstorm in January 2016, when the worst snowfall in 32 years stranded thousands of visitors at the Jeju airport. Every summer, the news tells us that it is the hottest year ever, and, this year, Jeju saw its underground water supplies hit the lowest level in 10 years.

If you have not noticed it yet, it is time to realize that the weather is changing. The world is changing because of our activities. The problem of climate change cannot be ignored anymore. It is not up to the scientists to save the world, but all of us who call Earth our home, and us who are contributing to the sickness of our planet. A little action on our part as individuals, adds up to a large contribution to the world. I sincerely ask that every Jeju-NU student start to make caring about the environment a personal habit. A simple thing we can start to do is to reduce the amount of trash that we produce. Separating the garbage properly according to the different types of waste also helps. When things that can be recycled are separated as much as possible from general waste, it reduces the amount of trash going into the incinerator or the landfill.

Everything that we do, no matter how insignificant the individual seems to be, has an effect on our world. If you love the beautiful nature around you, take care of it as you would your personal belongings. By remembering the simple formula of “waste not, want not”, let us together protect the beauty of Jeju, as well as the world, for as long as possible.
