In spite of the tense situation between South Korea and Japan, the fourth East Asian Cultural City was held in Jeju Island from September 20th to September 23rd. This project has been annually held in Jeju for mutual understanding and friendship of youth from the three countries: South Korea, China, and Japan. Each country has made promises to hold this annual cultural exchange, regardless of any political situation.

This year’s theme was ‘Planet Earth,’ and about 90 students from the three countries participated in a cultural and art project, which was prepared by a number of Jeju artists. Due to Typhoon Tapha, most of the activities were done in a banquet room and a seminar room of a hotel in Hamdeok.

The project consisted of four fields: photography; participants learned about taking monochrome pictures and how to develop them, music; participants showed a musical performance with upcycled musical instruments, dance; participants danced together in harmony, and art; participants drew national flowers of various countries. There were a total of 14 teams, and the number of students from each nation in a team was almost equal, to promote harmony between them.

In addition, several groups of Jeju students made the event more interesting. For example, ‘Guide Group’ helped foreign students for the smooth progress of activities, and ‘Game Group’ prepared various games that were simple but demanded teamwork, such as a ‘relay game’ and a ‘true or false game.’ Also, ‘Manitto,’ (which is the Korean version of ‘secret angel game’) was done. On the last day and at the end of the program, an ‘Earth Lighting Ceremony’ and ‘Manitto Revelation’ took place.

This harmonious event attempted to remind the youth from the three nations of the importance of protecting the environment – although there are many different countries in the world, there is only one Planet Earth. It is mostly likely that the 5th East Asian Cultural City Cultural Youth Camp will be held again in Jeju Island next year.
