What curriculum did you take when you were a student? Your school curriculum was probably based on a criterion-referenced test or a norm-referenced test. As Korea’s education system has been of great interest, its evaluation system has gradually developed. Nowadays, some education offices try to implement an innovative evaluation system, IB (The International Baccalaureate). What is IB? It assesses student work as direct evidence of achievement against
the stated goals of the Diploma Program (DP) courses. It means that IB utilizes both external and internal assessment in the DP.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education is supposed to use this IB next year for the following benefits. First, it enables students to engage in self-centered learning. Students can select subjects and topics and devise their own projects while teachers play a role of facilitators or supporters. Secondly, students can improve their problem-solving skills and creativity. IB emphasizes research and in-depth discussion and encourages students to learn from their peers, with students actively criticizing one another’s work. Third, through IB courses, students have the necessary competencies that colleges require. IB courses are a good way to show that students have taken tough courses in a range of subjects, from history to English to math to science, and are able to manage collegelevel coursework. Despite these good points of IB, there are some concerns with it such as its fairness and efficiency of operation. Actually, it is difficult for the results of IB tests to be used as the same standard compared with the results of other schools’ exams. Furthermore, it takes too much time and costs a lot in order to train teachers as professional raters and stabilize this IB.

Nevertheless, excessive competition in entrance examinations is expected to be reduced if we make efforts to apply IB to our education system. Therefore, by implementing IB, Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education can allow students to think critically and independently as well as how to inquire with care and logic. I am sure that IB will improve the quality of education in Jeju if it is successfully established.
