Halloween is celebrated on October 31st every year, on the eve of the Christian Feast of Chronicles; people put on various costumes throughout the United States. Halloween is known to originate from the traditional Celtic’s festival, ‘Samhain.’ At the end of the year, the Celts prepared food to solace souls of the dead and to exorcise the evil spirits. At this time, there was a custom of people dressing up grotesquely, because they were afraid of evil spirits - people believed that the costumes would make the evil spirits mistake them as the same kind. This became the prototype of the Halloween costume culture.

On Halloween today, each household carves the shapes of eyes, nose, and mouth on a pumpkin to make JackO'-Lanterns, and decorates their house with Halloween ornaments such as fake black cats and spiders. Also, dressing up parties are held in schools along with other places, and children and adults enjoy the festival dressed up as celebrities, movie characters or dressed in traditional themes.

Children get dressed up as monsters, witches, and ghosts, and then knock on neighbors’ doors to get candies and chocolates. They shout “Trick or Treat!” and it means ‘If you don't give me cookies, I will trick you.’ This is a representative Halloween game, originated from the custom of giving food to children and poor people who wandered around from house to house on special days in the Middle Ages.

Halloween also connects neighbors and activates local cultural activities. It can contribute to society in various ways. Above all, on Halloween Day, ghosts, bats, and black cats that remind us of death or bad luck are usually symbols of joy. Everybody enjoys this festival, outside of daily life. Today, you can also enjoy Halloween in Korea. The amusement park hosts Halloween festivals and parades. Young Koreans dressed up in costumes can be easily seen as well.
