(Korean Language and Literature, Junior)

Studying in Korea has been a dream of mine since I was 14 years old. And now, here I am! I packed my bags and travelled to Korea in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. What could possibly go wrong? It’s been nearly 2 months since I arrived here in Jeju and coming to study here during this time was the best decision of my life.

A question I am asked a lot is ‘why did I study in Jeju and not Seoul?’ and my reason for this wasn’t clear to me until I arrived. I am a very relaxed person who prefers the countryside and small towns compared to large cities full of people, so when I applied to JNU, I had the beauty of Jeju
Island in mind. Also, less people speak English in Jeju so I believed this was the best place to learn and improve my Korean. Little did I know, I would soon fall in love with this island and the people who live here. Even though I will be staying in Jeju for a year, I am already dreading the day I must leave. Jeju Island and its residents have been so welcoming that it truly feels like home.

The university has done everything to make sure that we are having the best experience possible. I must be honest and say that classes are long and difficult, but I actually really enjoy them!

The teachers are very supportive, and my Korean has already improved greatly! Since arriving in Korea, my confidence has grown, and I have more friends now than ever! I am very lucky that I decided to come to Korea now rather than later. I have also had the opportunity to explore so many places and travel the island without many restrictions due to how well Jeju Island has handled the pandemic. I am very surprised with how many friends I have made and how quickly we became close.

One friend even invited me to her grandmother’s home to celebrate Chuseok. This experience was amazing, and I got to experience true Korean culture even though we are in the middle of a pandemic. I think if I studied somewhere else in Korea, I wouldn’t have had that opportunity due to the risk of infection.

So, why is studying in Jeju, during the pandemic, the best decision of my life? Due to the pandemic, I have seen JNU from a different perspective. I have been able to meet people that maybe I would not have met under normal circumstances. I have been able to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as there are fewer students on campus. I have been able to focus on learning Korean, being able to speak with familiar people without having to introduce myself each time! Studying here during the pandemic has its risks as I could be sent back home to the UK if the virus gets out of control but I will never regret the decision to come to JNU. I would like to thank all the students, Korean and International, for making my studying experience the best it can be!
