Is it easy to learn Korean language? No, it has never been easy for me. Since the time I came to Korea, the biggest problem I faced was communication in society. I did not know Korean language, and I used to use the sign language (like a caveman) whenever I went out.

I come from Pakistan, and our language (Pakistanis) shares only one similarity with Korean language, that the sentence structure is the same as Korean i.e., subject + object + verb.

Apart from this, there are not many similarities. One of the main problems I faced in Korean language was the counting system. There are two counting systems, one stemming from Chinese and the other a native Korean counting system. Telling time was the most confusing thing for me because hours are denoted with native Korean counting numbers and minutes with Chinese numbers. For the first 6 months, I was unable to tell the time in Korean because I used to say either hours in Chinese counting and minutes in Korean counting. Later, I corrected myself after each mistake and I learned to tell the time correctly.

Another strange thing that was difficult to understand when I entered Korea was whenever people were saying “yes,” they say “Nay.” Through all my previous experiences with languages, I never heard any form of “yes” starting from a (n) sound. I used to think that words
starting form “n” sound should definitely mean “no” as it was in Urdu (my native language) “Na” or “Nahi” both of which means no and in English “No”.

So, it took me a while to adjust into the Korean environment and to learn about language and culture. Eventually, I liked Korean culture and values because they are so close to my native culture. Korean people are  very  respectful to foreigners. Especially the sense to hospitality is quite similar to my culture (Indian and Pakistani).

Meanwhile, learning Korean language remains a challenge for me, I have improved significantly over my 1 and half year stay in Korea. I am learning Korean language everyday but still I lag  behind. Now, I have developed enough vocabulary that I join those words and make a sentence. Although I make correct sentences, those expressions are not used in everyday speaking.
