On October 25th, Won HeeRyong, the governor of Jeju Island, held a press conference at Songaksan, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si and announced the ‘Clean Jeju, Songak Declaration,’ promising to prevent unsustainable development that hurts the nature of Jeju Island.

Accordingly, the declaration led to the following actions: to make an attempt to designate Songaksan area as cultural asset, to oppose the construction of Jeju Animal Theme Park, to decline the development business regarding Ora Tourist Complex, to conserve Jusangjeolli Cliff in Jungmun Tourist Complex, etc. On the other hand, there are also backlashes against the brakes on the large-scale investment and development businesses. A number of local residents in the vicinity of Songaksan are rejecting the designation but demanding to begin New Ocean Town business for local development and job opportunities. Similarly, the pros of Ora Tourist Complex development are against Songak Declaration and seek to revive the local economy, since the Ora region has been neglected for about 30 years even after the area was designated as a tourism area. Also, the Jeju Animal Theme Park has sued the residents who opposed and demanded fifty million won for the construction delay. The COVID-19 crisis has made the situation worse – Jeju Island has been suffering economic shrinkage since the outbreak of pandemic, just like other regions.
