The snowballing national scandal centered around the Korea Land and Housing Corp. (LH) is a major incident that has caused public anger and distrust on public institutions. There are two main reasons why many people are outraged by ‘LH scandal.’ They can be seen from two perspectives: the moral and dedicated. First, from the moral aspect, some LH employees put private interests before public interest. They used confidential information, which they had to keep secret, to multiply their property. Internal information is confidential and the use of it for private purposes denies the system of the nation and violates the credibility of the people in public institutions. Next, as a public official, they did not try to take responsibility for their misbehavior. Some employees of LH, a state-run company in charge of stabilizing people’s housing, did not faithfully carry out their duty. Also, they initialized their cell phones to destroy evidence, not regretting their wrongdoings.

I’m not an expert, so I can’t offer a complete solution to this situation, but at least I can offer a way to prevent this problem from happening again based on historical events. Readers may have heard Arnold Joseph Toynbee’s words, who is a famous 20th-century British historian, “The greatest tragedy for mankind lies in learning no lessons from past history”. The words contain a message: Do not forget or repeat the wrongs of the past. Regarding the LH scandal, the historical figure of Yoo Seong-ryong will lead to reflection on the fundamental virtues of public officials. Yoo Seong-ryong is well known to the public as a great figure and a man of integrity during the Joseon Dynasty. He was a noble from a wealthy family, but he was so upright that he usually showed modest behaviors, such as eating only vegetables and rice, and neighbors around him gave money for his funeral because he had no own money to hold a funeral when he died. In other words, he is a person who deserves to be modeled after in terms of integrity and responsibility. In addition, Yoo Seong-ryong frequently reflected on the fundamental virtues of public officials by saying, “I look back on the past and be wary of the future.”

As such, we can reflect on what is happening through historical facts in the past and prevent possible future events in advance. When you are trying to do something, I think it’s better to judge whether what you’re trying to do is morally right or wrong through historical facts.
