It is important to remember nationwide independent activists, but it is also important to take a look around in Jeju Island. Oh ByeongYun is one of Jeju’s heroes who fought for Korea’s independence, which was the foundation for the Republic of Korea. He attacked and carried out arson attacks on Seogwipo Jungmun police station with many followers. With his meritorious deeds, he was rewarded for the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 2005. This is a reward which is given to people who had outstanding contributions to a foundation of the Republic of Korea by the President of South Korea.

Oh Byeong-Yun was born in Hawondong, Seogwipo-si in Jeju on November 10th, 1901, and died on April 20th, 1973. He dedicated his whole seventytwo years of life to struggles and sacrifices for independence. Additionally, he concentrated on fighting for independence against Japan. On September 19th, 1918, the Buddhist priest Kim Yeon-Il of Beopjeongsa Temple announced that the “Japanese not only swallowed up Joseon, but also treats us brutally. Let’s beat Japanese government officials and drive Japanese dealers out of Jeju Island!” Particularly, Oh ByeongYun was one of the believers of Beopjeongsa Temple, so he accepted Kim Yeon-Il’s thoughts of Japanese brutality and the necessity of armed struggles. With about four hundred people whose ideas were similar to Oh ByeongYun gathered and conducted a surprise attack on the police station where Japanese police officers tortured and suppressed Koreans. On October 5th in 1918, about four hundred people were gathered to attack Jungmun police station. They cut wires and tied up oppressive Japanese police officers and fiercely fought against them for about two days. Oh ByeongYun was arrested by the police and was sentenced to one-year imprisonment, which lead him to being severely beaten and tortured.
