Jeju-NU is holding classes taught in foreign. Especially, many academic departments opened classes in English by either Korean professors or foreign professors. So, what do foreign students think about those classes?
Through interviews, most of them replied that they enjoyed or are enjoying the classes. They feel more comfortable in those classes as they usually know English more than Korean.
Some students said, “Since most of classes are given in English in my country, the participation level of students is a little higher than here. I saw many Korean students are afraid of speaking and writing in English, so they just sit at the back of the class and do something else.”
They also pointed out the quality of professors. They see that the level of giving a lecture in English varies a lot from one professor to another. Some professors are more than good enough to lead the classes, but some are confusing the students in his or her classes, or even making them frustrated.
But many interviewed students mentioned that the most important thing is passion and enthusiasm for the class. Even if the English level of students or the professor is a little low, their willingness to determines how interesting and exciting the class is. They also emphasized that it is important not to speak in Korean. If the professor speaks Korean or allows the students to speak Korean, then the amount of speaking Korean in class increases eventually ends up with having the lecture not solely in English.
