People say that Jeju is a beautiful Island. Artists have come to Jeju and some of them have been enchanted by the nature and lives here. Or others have come with sad stories. The Islander has chosen to highlight three artists: Byun Shi-Ji, Lee Jung-Seop and Kim Young-Gap. The three of them have expressed Jeju in their own ways. The main material is the same, ‘Jeju’, but the expression and mood of the works are different.

Byun Shi-Ji, an artist of the storm

Byun Shi-Ji's work is exhibited in Gidang Art Museum in Seogwipo.
Byun's artwork is about Jeju. In his paintings, there are usually one man and one horse, stone walls, crow pine tree and rough waves. Byun's nickname is ‘artist of the storm’ and his paintings really show waves and storms. According to Docent's explanation, Byun drew only one man in one painting. The one man means that the visitors could communicate with the man in the painting. Also, the painting color is usually yellow, invoking the wilderness of Jeju. Some people say that seems like sadness.
Byun Shi-Ji's paintings are permanently exhibited in the Smithsonian Museum. Also, Gidang Art Museum permanently exhibits Byun's artworks. Gidang Art Museum is funded by Kang Goo-Bum.
