The member of the Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans and Fisheries Committee, Wunam Kim, announced that the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries made its decision on Dec. 17.
In advanced to this decision, the government carried a contest in a field of marine vaccine, starting the marine research center supporting business this year for the first time.
From next year, the marine vaccine research center will receive 10 trillion won as financial support from the government for 10 years, in order to nurture experts for the development of the vaccine up to the level of global society, to develop marine vaccine with high efficiency, and to lead the industrialization of the vaccine.
This vaccine research business will include 79 researchers from 11 organizations such as Jeju-NU, Jejuisland, andJeju Marine Fish-Culture Cooperation.
According to the study of Jeju-NU, the amount of domestic farming fishery product is approximately 80,000 ton and the revenue is 720 billion won. Due to various fishery diseases, the fishing mortality rate is more than 50 % and the amount of damage is estimated more than 200 billion won.
Experts choose the biggest reason for the death of the farmingfish as the fishery disease, but, as the development and distribution of the marine vaccine in Korea is distinctly low compared to other developed countries, the amount of damage is not diminished.
Professor Jaehee Lee, the manager of the research, stated, “Through a systematic monitoring of fishery diseases in Jeju which represents our farming fish industry, the marine vaccine research center will be run to produce research specialists and multi vaccine with high quality.”
