On March 31, Peace Butterfly Concert took place in Ara Muse Hall.

The Peace Butterfly concert was held three times, butthis is the first Peace Butterfly concert held on a national scale. Representatives from five campusesincluding the College of Education helped organize the event. From 10 am to 6 pm, the joint college-runned committee exhibited the comfort women problem which students can enjoy freely, hold booths and sell goods to fundraisers. From 7 pm to 9 pm a concert that showcases songs about the comfort women took place.

Comfort women areknown as women and girls forced into sexual slavery by the imperial Japanese Army before and during World War II. The term ‘comfort women’ comes from a translation of the Japanese euphemism ‘ianfu’ and the similar Korean term ‘wianbu’.

Estimates vary as to how many Korean women were involved, with numbers ranging from as low as 20,000 to as high as 360,000 to 410,000, according to Chinese sources. The exact numbers are still in debate.

According to a testimony, young women from countries in imperial Japanese custody were abducted from their homes. In many cases, women were also lured with promises of work in factories or restaurants. However, once they were recruited, the women were incarcerated in comfort stations in foreign lands.

Former Wianbu hold a Wednesday-protest every Wednesday in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, Korea.

Sadly, the average age of Wianbu is 89. It is hard for them to keep up this demonstration due to their old age. An organization called thePeaceful Butterfly came together to support the Wianbu with not only university students but also various people who work in different fields.

The plan behind the Peace Butterfly concert is to first, construct a monument for the former Comfort Women of Jeju Island. Second, they are hoping to get 2015 people’s signature since it is the year of 2015. Third, the concert will help the youth learn about part of Korean’s painful history.
