The 16th Jeju Women’s Film Festival
From September 11 to 15, the 16th Jeju Women’s Film Festival will take place at the Jeju Movie Culture Art Center in Tap-dong, with this year’s festival titled, “…is that really so?”
41 films from 15 countries are centered around women’s rights, gender equality, and the social and economic positions for women around the world.
The festival title, “…is that really so?” is in response to those who believe that gender discrimination no longer exists in the world. It also questions the limitations that women face in their current social and economical positions.

Films such as “Anita Hill”, a documentary based on the sexual harrasment case of federal judge Clarence Thomas back in the 90’s, is a must see and movie goers are invited to to stay for a special talk with invited guest speakers after the movie screening.
The festival offers English and Korean subtitles for most films. (No English subtitles available for the following films: “Two Days One Night”, “Still the Water”, “The Sleeping Beauty” and “Masquerade of Her”.)
Must-see films include a Swedish film “2”, which depicts the lives aspiring girls in their 20’s living on their own and a locally made film, “The Stories of Haenyeo” that documents the lives of 50 or so haeyneos.
Admission tickets start from 6,000 won per film although one-day (15,000 won) and five-day festival passes (20,000 won) are also available. Only cash will be accepted as payment.
