Held by the JNU International Students Organization (JISO), Jeju-NU International Students Day was held at Ara-Muse Hall last September 24.  A spectacle of music, song, dance and multicultural extravaganzas were shared by over 800 foreign students from over 14 countries.

“The main purpose of this event is to bring all foreign students into one platform irrespective of the differences in culture or language to reach a common goal together as one.” said Lalinka Herath, president of JISO.

Various kinds of performances were presented from traditional to modern. Each performer represented their country with pride and it shows that every country has its own uniqueness and talent to show.

“An event like this is great because we can know other countries culture and customs. I am looking forward for more events wherein we can exhibit our talents,” said Yuvasreen Purosothaman (Mechatronics Engineering, PhD 1).

The winners from Sri Lanka showed a very unique traditional performance “Thala vs Thalam”, a cultural harmony of two main Sri Lankan races, Sinhalese and Tamils. The modern dance team from China won second place while third place was awarded to the Japanese dance team.

“It is a great opportunity; we didn’t expect that we will win because it is a huge competition. We won because of our courage, commitment and unity that we put on our performance to represent our country,” said Handun Eranga Jayasinghe (Marine Life Sciences, 2).

“The Jeju-NU International Students Day is not only for international students but also for Korean students to be able to share and understand different cultures,” commented Kang Young-Hoon, Dean of Center of International Affairs.
