Have you ever heard of “Kimchi Day” on November 22nd? It is a day to promote the kimchi culture’s values and succession. It will celebrate its third anniversary this coming November 22nd. Having said that however, many people are still unaware of this day and a few even make fun of it. Such as “If there is a day of kimchi, where is Bulgogi Day?” Surprisingly, interest in “Kimchi Day” is higher in other countries such as the United States. According to Korea Agro–Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT), the New York State Assembly announced that it has decided to enact a day to honor this special Korean delicacy.

In February, NYC became the third US state to designate Nov. 22nd as “Kimchi Day” and as a part of the promotion of the day, aT Center New York displayed a large-scale billboard in the middle of NYC Times Square.

There have been many attempts first by Japan and then by China to claim that this special Korean dish is Japanese and Chinese respectively. Also, hanbok was even described as a tradition of Chinese minorities at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Olympics. However, thanks to many efforts to protect and promote kimchi as well as its unique Korean tradition; they are getting popular worldwide. Even now, kimchi is introduced as “kimchi” not “pao chai” or “kimuchi”. It is hoped that Kimchi Day will be known not only abroad but also in Korea.
