The director of “Bowling for Columbine” Michael Moore once said, “Guns don’t kill people- Americans kill people.” Michael Moore is ashamed of American violence and its highest gun crime rate in the world. He thinks that the policies of gun laws in the U.S are weak. Also, he feels that Americans are wrong about the causes of the high rate of gun crimes in the U.S. and that the real cause is fear.

Michael Moore is right. Guns can be a defensive weapon, but in America this can also be dangerous. American gun laws describe guns as simply firearms, which includes all types of weapons. Canada divides firearms into non-restricted, restricted and prohibited categories, and also whether if it is an automatic weapon or handgun. Americans say that the causes of high gun crimes in the U.S. are violent video games and the history of America. It is interesting that most of the violent video games are from Japan and other countries have violent histories too, for example, Germany with Nazism and Japan with the Invasion of China, and their aggression during Second World War. America needs to stop blaming these reasons for the problem and find a way to fix it. America is a society of fear. Fear is leading to violence in American society. According to the research of new.gallup.com in Washington, D.C., 60% of Americans own firearms for safety/protection. Americans want protection against violence, so they buy a gun to protect themselves from a gun. The fear of guns is causing a increase in the ownership of guns in U.S.. As a result, it is increasing the possibility of gun violence.

I am from South Korea, and I have never met anyone that owns a gun. It is illegal to own a gun in Korea. There isn’t a lot of gun crimes or homicide in Korea, there are no mass killings or random gun violence. In America more than 20 people can be killed easily with an automatic weapon. For example, the Columbine Massacre in 1999 killed 15 people including the killers. The Virginia Tech Massacre in 2007, 26 people were killed. If America can’t control the guns, there will be more gun crimes, killing even more people.
