Christmas is a Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus, who people believe is the son of God. For most people, it takes place every year on Dec 25th - the day that the Roman Catholic Church chose to mark Jesus’ birthday. The term ‘Christmas’ comes from the old English phrase Cristes maesse, which means ‘Christ’s Mass’. A mass service is in which Christian believe that Jesus died for them and came back to life. So, we get the name Christ-Mass shortened to Christmas. Moreover, how about X’mas? Lots of people think it is just a modern-day abbreviation, but its origins go back to the 16th century. The ‘X’ represents the Greek letter ‘Chi’ – the first letter in the Greek word for Christ.

But in fact, nobody knows the exact date when he was born. No date is given in the Bible but the first record of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th by Sextus Julius Africanus was in 221 and later became the universally accepted date. Since the 19th century, the event has been a federal holiday. Nowadays, it is celebrated by people around the world, whether they are Christians or not. It is a common time for a family to gather around to eat a good dinner such as turkey and dessert, decorating the tree and trading presents on Christmas Eve. Presents are placed under the tree in wrapped gift boxes and are not to be opened until Christmas day.

In conclusion, Christmas is basically the best time of the year for both children and adults. As the day is coming in this month, trading presents and making cookies would be a great idea for sure.
