Street Pollution: Unwelcome guest at the Cherry Blossom Street

As the spring season approaches, the problem of street pollution is becoming worse. The cherry blossoms on JNU's street is well-known as a main attraction. However, the street pollution damages Jeju's cherry blossom attractions every year, including the JNU campus. Due to COVID-19, festivals and events haven't been held in recent years. But, from this year, most of the events have recovered. For example, the Cherry Blossom festival took place on Jeonnong-ro from March 24 to 26. It was the first festival in four years. Yet, the garbage increased as more people attended the events. So, people should pay more attention to the problem. People have inquired about trash cans on the streets around the attractions. Still, managing trash cans on the street is difficult. Anybody in Korea is required to pay a tax when they dispose of trash (through a system known as the pay-as-you-go system). Therefore if a trash can is set up, there is a possibility of excessive dumping there to avoid tax. Everyone must continually consider how to solve this issue from various angles. Because of the garbage all around, there is high possibility that people who came from other country have bad impression about the attraction. Recently lots of people have become interested in the JNU cherry blossom street and even the street is introduced by influencer bloggers. Thus, to protect and promote JNU's image, Students need to find a way to keep JNU’s signature road beautiful.
