The project to build a new airport in Jeju has been promoted quite aggressively up to now. This is because the Ministry of Environment(ME) made a decision to conditionally agree to the Strategic Environmental Assessment(SEA) related to the construction of Jeju's new airport submitted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport(MOLIT) on the March 6th. In the meantime, the construction of Jeju's new airport has been put on hold because it could damage the environment of Jeju. Issues were raised in various environmental aspects, such as the possibility of damage to birds, the environmental impact on endangered animals, and the impact on the southern bottlenose dolphin, a natural monumental mascot.

The SEA submitted by MOLIT suggested measures to solve this problem, and the ME gave conditional consent. However, it would be the Jeju residents who suffer the most from the construction of the airport, such as damage from aircraft noise and prejudice on living rights due to increased tourists. In order to collect the opinions of Jeju residents, the Jeju Provine has held a total of three provincial hearings so far. On March 29th and April 6th, listening sessions were held in Seongsan-eup and Seogwipo-si. On April 24, the final hearing will be held in Jeju-si. The Jeju Province plans to directly listen and collect the opinions of the residents through the provincial hearing. Jeju Province is also accepting online opinions on the website of the Jeju Provincial Government until May 8. Opinions raised through public hearings and online will be delivered to the MOLIT.
