The Jeju Wildfire Festival, which has held its place as Jeju’s representative festival for decades, is standing at a crossroads. The Jeju Wildfire Festival is a festival that started to publicize the old culture of Jeju called 'bangae', which was set on fire in the village pasture in early spring to get rid of pests and old grass. However, due to COVID-19 aftermath effects and the risk of wildfire, it was not possible to, hold any kind of fire related events even though it was a festival that was a face-to-face one in four years. This was because it was pointed out that March, when the wildfire festival is held, is a time when the risk of forest fires is high nationwide. In particular, last year's wildfire festival was canceled due to the aftermath of a large forest fire in Gangwon-do. In addition, problems related to environmental damage such as emissions of a large amount of carbon and air pollution due to wildfire festivals are constantly occurring. On the website of Jeju City Hall, opinions are being raised that the festival should be changed or abolished, saying that it is a festival that goes against the times. Jeju City announced that it would review the festival method through the Festival Evaluation Committee in response to the point that the method of conducting the festival, which emits a lot of carbon, should be reexamined during times of high forest fire risk.
