The 12th Gapado Cheongbori Festival will be held for a month from April 1st to April 30th, 2023. Gapado Island's "cheongbori" is a popular tourist destination. Cheongbori refers to green barley in Korean. The festival place is Gapado, Seogwipo-si, and you can enter the island by boat. Gapado is the fourth largest among Jeju's associated islands. The isle is formed like a stingray swimming through the sea when viewed from above. There are several theories of how the name Gapado came to be, and one of them states that it resembles a stingray (known in Jeju language as gaffari), hence the given forth name. When you enter the island near the port, there are some places where you can rent bicycles. Since there are no uphill roads, you can walk around the whole island in 1-2 hours, so walking around is not hard. Traditionally, people grew barley as it grows well from just seeds; but they were too busy working at sea to pay attention to cultivation. The shape of green barley is comparable to that of a regular barley, but unlike regular barley, it’s green. Yet, some confuse them with ungrown barley due to their distinct color. You can make a barley flute during this festival, walk around a beautiful field of barley, and compete in a gourd crab race. Also, you can take part in traditional culture by constructing stone pagodas and tossing gomushin (shoes made with rubber) shoes far into the distance.
