Sun-I Samch’on is a creative opera based on the novel of the same name by Hyun Ki-young, which deals with the Jeju conflict. The book is based on the genocide that took place in Bukchon-ri, Jocheon-myeon, Jeju-si during this heinous incident. Jeju City and the Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation are in charge of the planning and production.

To explain the Jeju rebellion in more detail, it is known as the Jeju April 3 Incident in Korea, was a massacre on Jeju Island from April 1948 to May 1949. This Jeju incident was notable for its extreme violence; between 14,000 and 30,000 people (10 percent of Jeju's population) were killed, and 40,000 fled to Japan. Atrocities and war crimes were committed by both sides, but historians have noted that the methods used by the South Korean government to suppress protesters and rebels were especially cruel.

Since the novel dealt with 4.3 for the first time, in addition to being released when 4.3 was still forbidden, the author had to endure severe persecution. With the help of this project, the incident achieved wider awareness, which encouraged the 4.3 truth-seeking movements. The prologue aria of the opera refers to the novel's author, Hyun Ki-young. The song expresses the author's sorrow at the time of writing as well as his desire to convey the suffering of his city.

Following the performance in Jeju this year, the opera at the Busan Culture Center is planned for August. This means expanding and reaching audiences across the country following Gyeong-gi and Seoul. Previously, the inventive opera " Sun-I Samch’on" was performed twice in 2022 at the Seoul's Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, and it got favorable reviews from both reviewers and viewers. Reservations for this Jeju performance can be made on the Jeju Art Center's website.
