Ever since last semester, JNU’s International Students Organization (JISO) has organized multiple events aimed at helping the foreign community of our university make the most out of their life in Jeju Island. Following these same footsteps, JISO, in collaboration with the Jeju National Museum – located in the 17 Iljudong-ro street – have prepared four different experiential exhibitions centered around showcasing Jeju’s traditions. These programs will start from March 31st until November 5th and are aiming to have 30 students per session. The first experience took place on March 31st, which had students make their own name stamps through an engraving technique. This seal – called dojang in Korean – is of everyday use in Korea, as it is utilized to sign one’s name in Hangul in official documents. The second experience will take place on May 5th, and students will have the opportunity to make Jeju traditional lunchboxes, named charong. Each participating member will weave their own baskets. The third experience will consist of depicting a character of the Hyojaemunjado – a series of 8 paintings of Chinse characters that represent the eight core values of Confucianism in Jeju Island – with traditional pigments. It will take place on July 3rd. Finally, the fourth experience will also include a lecture about Buddhism in Jeju Island by analyzing an Arhat statue: the representation of a person that ends the reincarnation cycle by reaching the Nirvana. The statue will remain in the museum from September to January of next year, so the program is intended to take place on October 4th and November 5th this year. In order to participate in the remainder of the programs, please follow the Facebook page of JISO or contact their email (jnujiso@jejunu.ac.kr), as well as the Instagram of the Office of International Affars (@oia.jnu.)
