In Korea, October 9th is ‘Hangul Proclamation Day.’ Commemorating this national holiday, JNU’s Korean Language and Culture Center held ‘The 13th Province-wide Foreigners’ Korean Speaking Contest’ on Wednesday, October 9th.

This annual event was held to improve the Korean skills of foreigners residing in Jeju Island and to provide them with opportunities to know about Korean culture. Moreover, it was an opportunity for them to meet up together and socialize. It took place in the Seminar Room of the College of Humanities, second building.

The subject of the speaking contest was free, but it was considered better to talk about Korean language or life in Korea. Except for the grand prize, the contest separated its award categories into two – a university student category and a public category. The grand prize winner and the second place winner of the previous contests were exempt from participation.

Twenty-three foreigners from eight countries (such as Mongolia, Vietnam, Japan, etc.) participated, and the grand prize went to Wang Ja-Yeong (Department of Japanese Language & Literature, JNU) from China, with the subject ‘About horror and fear’; containing a message giving courage and hope to the foreigners living in Korea.
