A ‘Real-Time Bus Location Information System’ was introduced for the first in Jeju Island by Jeju Province, in cooperation with Kakao. This cutting-edge bus information technology was introduced at 11:00 a.m., on September 4th and had been the subject of discussions between Jeju Island and Kakao since last year.

This system shows buses moving on maps in real time. People can use public transportation more easily by checking the accurate location of the buses from the application called ‘Kakaomap.’ Especially, this is a combination of a private platform and public data owned by the province. The system was carried forward as the first public-private partnership project of the country’s portal. Location information data is gathered on the Jeju big data platform, and the gathered data is linked to Kakao servers. Finally, differentiated real-time bus location information is provided to the public.

What has improved on this system? First, the accuracy of the bus location information has improved by marking the speed of the bus and the model of the bus on the route. Second, the estimation of the waiting time for a ride is now available. Also, it became possible to track the direction of a bus. Through these functions, people can be visually guided by maps, not on bus arrival schedule lists. Lastly, a more detailed announcement service became possible. Prior to the introduction of the system, the bus announcement of getting on and off offered only one stop ahead. Now, a more detailed bus stop announcement service is available.

Such improvements in services can allow residents and tourists to reduce unnecessary waiting times and make their transfer easier. Furthermore, as real-time bus location information can be checked on mobile phones, people can take advantage of it even in the bus stops that do not have bus arrival information system devices. This is considered as a good example of introducing a useful information system based on big data, which is leading the 21st century. This is expected to improve the quality of life of Jeju residents and tourists’ awareness of Jeju’s public transportation services.
