It has been identified that average delivery fee for the Jeju region is approximately five times more expensive than other regions. Especially, delivery companies imposing extra shipping fees in the name of ‘island delivery charge’ has been a continuous controversy in terms of fairness.

According to research on delivery fees announced by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on July 8th, Jeju region’s average delivery fee was 2,596 won, and it was about 5 times more expensive than that of regions on the Korean Peninsula, which was 527 won.

In order to solve the extra fee problems and to legislate ‘proper ferry charges’, the Korean Taekbae Workers’ Union Jeju branch has determined to exercise a signature collecting campaign, both online and offline, from September 1st to October 31st. The union also added that they will have interviews with members of the National Assembly for speedy lawmaking.

The union claimed that the so-called ‘Big Five shipping companies’ must reveal ‘what makes them charge Jeju residents such fees’ and ‘where the profits are being used except for the prime cost 500 won, which is the actual ocean freight charge’.
