On September 1st , the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education announced that a total of four schools (Tosan Elementary School, Pyoseon Elementary, Middle, and High School) will designated as ‘IB Schools’ from the year 2021.

An IB DP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Program) school refers to the concept of overall schools which are considering or preparing the implement of IB and which are certified as an ‘IB World School’. IB schools’ goal is ‘to educate democratic citizens who are inquisitive, considerate, and who communicates with the world’. They are expected to support students’ learning through creative curriculum and innovative lessons and assessments.

Especially, the Jeju Provincial Office of Education selected these IB schools as the new model for Jeju’s autonomous school for the first time, and therefore they will be granted exceptions regarding school management and curriculum in accordance with Jeju Special Law.

In addition, the Jeju Office of Education selected nine ‘Dahondi learning schools,’ which are also Jeju’s autonomous schools: Seongsan Elementary School, Ildo Elementary School, Kimnyeong Elementary School, etc. Dahondi learning schools have been operating since 2015, and they pursue a ‘future oriented school model that realizes education community where people respect and cooperate each other’.

The thirteen schools that were newly designated as Jeju’s autonomous schools will operate until 2024 (for about four years), and their continued designation will be decided by comprehensive assessment.
