Upcycling is taking waste and creating something new from it in its current state, whereas recycling just involves the destruction of waste in order to create something new. Waste gets a higher value with fresh and eco-friendly ideas and turns out to be useful in other fields. Something useless transforms in to something totally new. These days, companies and governments try to apply upcycling ideas into various fields. Here are several upcycling examples in Jeju Island.

On August 31, 2020, two upcycled benches made out of waste plastic were set up on the fourth course of Olleh-gil in Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwiposi. It is the first public facility in Jeju Island that is made out of recycled materials. Recycling was the result of collaboration of many companies in different fields. Lock & Lock, a global household goods company, and Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation collected 1,400 kg of abandoned plastic bottles and airtight containers. Terra Cycle, the global recycling consultant company, recycled them into individual plastic pallets and these were transformed in to the bench using 3D printers. The plastic bottle design carved on the bench is expected to motivate people to practice ecofriendly behaviors.

There is also an example of space upcycling in Jeju Island. FREITAG, the upcycling brand from Switzerland, opened at Tap-dong, Jeju-si, utilizing an abandoned building. FREITAG transforms used truck tarps into highly functional, unique bags and accessories. It is now the third shop in South Korea. Bind Whale is a guest house which upcycled stone houses (Jeju traditional house specialized for low floor height and stone wall).
