Many local governments have actively developed their own local currencies, which can revive the economy by boosting transactions within their local districts and therefore increasing income. The name of Jeju’s local currency is "Tamnaneun Jeon" using the word ‘Tamra’, the old name of Jeju.

In April, Won Hee-Ryong, the governor of Jeju, announced a plan for issuing the local currency by this year. To improve the limitations of the current Jeju Gift Certificate, it will be an electronic local currency using mobile devices and debit cards. The distribution of Jeju’s local currency was originally scheduled to be issued in October, but it has been pushed back a month to November, and even the new date seems uncertain.

The Jeju Special Self-Governing Council's policy research office said in a report that Jeju’s local currency is expected to increase sales for small business owners, self-employed businesses, and alley markets, but the effects of economic revitalization will not be greater than that of other regions. It is due to the relatively low proportion of nonlocal consumption by provincial residents. On Jeju Island, large companies and department stores account for a relatively low proportion of sales compared to other regions, and people have low accessibility to other regions.

The policy is expected to be prepared after long deliberations with various experts and residents considering both the unique properties of island and based on other regions’ examples.
