Nokji Hospital is located in the Health Care Town in Seogwiposi and was fully funded by Greenland Group, a Chinese real estate developer. On December 5th 2018, Jeju Island allowed the hospital to operate, under the condition that it will only accept foreign tourists who come to Jeju for medical purposes. However, Nokji Hospital did not open for more than three months even after the conditional permission. In response, Jeju revoked its permission in April 2019. According to Medical Law, revocation of permission is possible if a hospital does not operate for more than three months after establishment permission without reasonable cause. 

Greenland Group appealed to the Supreme Court, but on October 20th, the Supreme Court  decided that the revocation of permission was legitimate. The basis of the ruling was the hospital’s Medical Law violation. 

Currently, all hospitals in South Korea are non-profit hospitals, which means that the income of the hospitals cannot be allocated outside but should be re-used inside. Nokji Hospital was in the spotlight for the possibility of being the first for-profit hospital.
