It has already been nearly two years since mankind was invaded by COVID-19. Those two years have changed people's way of life. In addition, the endless mutation of the coronavirus has made it unome. In this situation, “With Corona” response system, which means to coexist with the coronavirus, is scheduled to begin in South Korea as early as November this year.

“With Corona” began in the UK in August 2021, and it is currently in effect in countries like Singapore, Germany, France, and Denmark. Each country has a different enforcement form of the new system. The UK lifted the blockade and drastically eased regulations. On the other hand, Singapore is implementing the system while maintaining regulations such as social distancing and limiting the number of private gatherings. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), Korea is expected to implement the system while keeping some rules currently in effect like Singapore.

So, what are the priorities that need to be met to implement the new response system? First, the fatality rate should be lowered by raising the vaccination rate as much as possible. However, the current vaccination completion rate in Korea is 41.2% as of September 16, 2021, half of the group immunity target of 80%.

Second, we need to approach the shift step by step. Like Singapore, distancing should be eased, but the fatality rate should be lowered while maintaining regulations such as mask wearing obligations and business hours restrictions. Currently, the number of infected people per day in Singapore is 100 to 200, and the mortality rate has fallen to 0.1% which is the rate of the flu.

Third, we need to secure antiviral drugs. We will need to buy oral antiviral drugs which are undergoing clinical trial at various pharmaceutical companies. Considering that when swine flu spread in 2009, Tamiflu was administered to the people to reduce the prevalence, it is important to pre-purchase and secure antiviral drugs.

There are still many thresholds to overcome. However, even if you can't live without your mask like before the pandemic, it would be a lie if you were not looking forward to the idea that the day when you can meet and live with many people as before is approaching. I don't know when the “With Corona” system will be implemented, but I hope that the end of the virus will come to us as soon as possible.
