Lee Jae-Myung, one of the presidential candidates, made a promise to set an entrance fee for tourists who are coming to Jeju. This fee will be about 10,000 won per person and is planned to be used to preserve nature and prevent the gentrification that can happen from tourism. Garbage has also been a problem where the average garbage amount is about two times bigger than other regions in Korea because of tourists. It is now becoming a trend that the tourist attractions are limiting the amount of tourists or imposing nature conservation fees to the tourists. About 40 countries around the world have this policy but it will be the first time in Korea to have an entrance fee to go to a specific region.

Because it is an additional fee for people who are traveling within their own country, there were some negative reactions. Some stated they do not get the point of this fee because the money will be used again to attract more tourists. Also, they were curious how the people who are working in the tourism business will survive if the outcome consists of significance decline of tourists. One of the interviewers commented “It will be making Jeju into a country in of itself. If we start to pay in order to come here, the people will feel detached thus making Jeju into a lonely island.”

JNU students from t h e mainland were curious about how they will be viewed as. “We regularly go to the mainland to see our family and friends. And we don’t have a choice but to come back to Jeju for school. If we have to pay every time we go back, that will be very unfortunate,” one of the JNU student said.
