On October 5, Jeju announced stricter penalties for vehicles entering the bus lanes, starting next year. According to the existing laws, a fine of 50,000 won for passenger cars and 60,000 won for freight cars are imposed starting with the third violation. In response, people raised the issue of equity between bus lanes violations and other traffic rules – why so generous only on the bus lanes violation? In addition, Jeju was the only region in Korea where drivers were imposed fines only if they violate the law three times. Jeju has many rental cars due to the nature of tourist attractions, and therefore, the driver changes from time to time, making it difficult to find a person who drove the car.

In fact, Jeju notified a total of 27,000 violations of the law on bus-only lanes in the province. However, since penalties were imposed only for an offender who was caught three times, only about 5 percent of the total violations were punished. In order to solve this problem, Jeju Island decided to impose a penalty fee from the first violation on April 1, but temporarily postponed it due to the COVID-19.

Regarding such changes, a transportation official said “Like other laws, we will impose a fee for any violation on misusing the bus lanes from next year.”
