Literally meaning “all together harmonizing and becoming one”, ‘Daedongje’ was born in 1984 when Korea University named their university festival ‘Seoktap Daedong-je (The Granite Tower Festival).’ The festival – along with the celebrations – held a memorial service to honor the memory of the students who died in the process of fighting against the dictatorship for the democratization of Korea. Several universities participated in the memorial service, further spreading this tradition which is now is an essential element of the University culture of Korea. 

JNU’s festival, the ‘Ara Daedong-je’ aims to capture the original meaning of the Daedong-je tradition. With the slogan “Wake a Wave,” the Student Council has invited twelve guests, organized seven different programs, and created some challenges for students of JNU.

The festival took place on the 25th and the 26th of November in the Ara Muse Hall, with the events being s imul taneous ly s t reamed on YouTube. Compared to last year’s Daedong-je, this festival encouraged students to actively engage in the activities. However, only five of the programs featured in the festival allowed an on-site audience – the attendees either had to be vaccinated or had to present their results of their PCR test.

A staple of JNU’s student festivals is the showcase of talents that students have the opportunity to show. Nevertheless, due to COVID-19 restrictions, it has been impossible for students to do so. Therefore, a talent competition took place on the website ‘wakeawave.net’, in which students submitted videos showcasing their talents in singing, dancing, or any other aptitude. The talent contest rewarded three students in each category with the most amount of ‘likes’ in their videos, seeking to further make the participation of the community important.
