Following the launch of Korea’s first homegrown rocket “Nuri” in October, Jeju is preparing to launch a small rocket into space in December. J e j u and KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) signed an agreement to cooperate on several projects at the Jeju Province Government Seoul headquarters in July.

The reason KAIST chose Jeju as the rocket launch area is that it is considered one of the best launch azimuths, thanks to its closest location to the equator in South Korea. In addition, it is difficult to designate launching sites due to many airports and military bases on the mainland, but Jeju Island is relatively free from these restrictions. They chose Yongsu-ri,  Hangyeongmyeon as the launch area, and prior consultations with the residents have been completed. The researchers of the Department of Aerospace Engineering in KAIST are residing in the village and are preparing for the launch. They are expecting the final launch to take place in early December.

Jeju could be the starting point for the private space development industry with KAIST’s science rocket launch experiment. Besides, unlike Naro Space Center, which is currently led by the state, Jeju plans to actively foster space centers that can promote private-led space launches and research.
