Sitting here at a café staring at the blue ocean, a sense of bitter sweetness, almost melancholy,slowly takes over my body. The endless ocean in front of me is the perfect scenery for me to look back on the past six years. Then I notice a surfer in the middle of the ocean, sitting still on her surf board, gazing at the sea as if she was bewitched by the boundless blue horizon. Is she thinking what I’m thinking?

I hate to admit it but the time has come – the time that I must move on and reluctantly enter the jungle called society. Suddenly the famous last line of The Great Gatsby comes to my mind: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” But I am not trying to relate myself to the typical messages that the line is trying to convey, such as materialism or the American dream — I just felt that I was in the situation of rowing against the flow of the current, stuck between the past and the future.

The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has made the current even stronger. I see not only myself but many of my friends drifting in the era of confusion and lethargy. We have missed numerous college events for the past two years and will miss those days for the following years — leaving behind unfinished tasks and living forever with incompleteness. No one knows where we are heading to. However, one thing for sure: one day we will celebrate the end of this global crisis and return to our normal lives, for quite some time. Thus, let us never lose hope. Let us outlive COVID-19. So we, the boats against the current, must move on, no matter the situation.

I was the luckiest Editor-in- Chief of The Islander in that I had the honor to take the position for three years in a row, not to mention the wonderful reporters and professors that I have worked with. My dear readers and my dear reporters, this is the last newspaper that I am in charge of. I really wish you all to have an amazing college life, since you made mine extraordinary. 

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu. Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu.
