On the new path to recover our normal lives, vaccines are the most powerful tool at our disposal. In South Korea, restrictions are being lowered gradually, but most of them depend on your vaccination status. For example, restaurants can now accept large groups if at least half of them have been vaccinated. This is a very logical measure to prevent new waves, and it should be the start of the end of the pandemic.

However, not every person in Korea can benefit from this welldeserved relief. Foreigners who have been vaccinated abroad are, formally, not vaccinated, excepting those who received a quarantine exemption. It does not matter which country you came from, which vaccine you have received, etcetera. This situation is not only unfair, but also not logical from a health standpoint. What is the logic behind implementing a vaccination green card if a part of your population is never going to be able to access the system?

The problem could be with the communication between governments, and how difficult it can be to make sure every document is valid. Still, Korean citizens who have the same situation of being vaccinated abroad can get their passports without major inconveniences. Some foreign residents have chosen to receive the vaccine again here, as currently, revaccination is the only way to register a valid inoculation record. The KDCA, for its part, said it is aware of the inconveniences experienced by foreign residents, but failed to give an exact date as to when the government will begin to recognize their overseas vaccination record. 

This lack of attention by the government, and all the problems it generates, like not being able to access gyms, public baths, or nursing homes, have made the UK embassy file a public complaint against this situation. The answer to this, however, has not been satisfactory, as no real solution has been given to the problem.

For the moment, we foreigners who share this reality have no option but to wait, be in contact with our embassies, and try to enjoy as much as we can the time we get to live in this amazing country.
