As Yoon Suk-Yeol won the 20th presidential election, one of his Jeju pledges, "swift promotion of the second airport," is drawing attention. The most reason to establish the second airport is to accommodate the increasing number of tourists. However, strife will arise when carrying out the project due to objections from the opposition parties and Jeju residents.

The conflict has begun in November 2015 when the government finally announced that Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo- si, as a candidate site for the second airport. Since then, the project has been in a sharp conflict between pros and cons. A committee was composed centering on Seongsan-eup residents, civic organizations, and environmental groups to focus on procedural, environmental, and acceptability issues.

The movement against the second airport spread across the country. Eventually, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province agreed to a poll on the second airport project in December 2020 to confirm the final position of residents. In a poll conducted last year, many people opposed the construction of a second airport. But Jeju suggested that the project needs to be promoted, contrary to the results.

However, when the Ministry of Environment finally rejected the strategic environmental impact assessment in July 2021, it was virtually up to the next government to push for the second airport. As The Yoon Suk-Yeol administration has finally pledged to build a second airport in Jeju, and the conflict between arguments and against has started again.
