The Jeju Fire Festival, one of the most famous annual events in Jeju, was scheduled to begin on March 18, 2022. The festival originated from the slash and burn agriculture. Older generations of farmers in Jeju often used the slash and burn technique to maximize the limited land of the island. However, as the agricultural technology developed, the technique became a thing of the past. To honor the prosperities slash and burn agriculture gave, Jeju has decided to celebrate it with the Fire Festival. Up until now, the Jeju Fire Festival symbolizes prosperity and blessing for the future.

Though the reservations were already completed on March 9, 2022, the event was canceled on March 14, 2022. So why was it canceled?

The 24th Jeju Fire Festival has been canceled in respect for the recent wildfires in the east coast of South Korea. The east coast wildfire has destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of people in the areas neighboring Uljin and Samcheok. The fire traveled through the woods with extreme speed due to dry season. Ultimately, the disaster has destroyed more the 18,000 hectares of woodland, lasting for nine days.

However, the Jeju Fire Festival not only celebrates the slash and burn agriculture, but it also spread awareness of planting more trees. Each year, the festival gave out tree seedlings as a message to cherish Mother Nature. It might have been a good idea to spread hope through this celebration.
