“Full-scale war – invasion – was started by Ukraine’s aggressive neighbor, Russia” tells Ohla to The Islander. “Our children are being killed, and our women are being raped; our people are fleeing, and their houses are being bombarded. Our landmarks are gone too. Russian soldiers are proudly looting stores and houses, yet we are expected to give up our homeland. I believe, however, that Ukraine has proved the whole world that our army will never give up. They will fight until the end for what is ours.”

Ohla and Olena are currently studying Korean in JNU. Both of them came six months ago, unaware of the shocking turn of events that are currently going on in their country. Despite the distance, resilience is a trait that defines them: both have taken part into activism and campaigns to spread awareness of the tragedy that has alarmed the whole world.

In an effort to get a better insight of the ongoing situation. The Islander staff got the opportunity to hear their stories.

Peace is not having to worry for your life; having a home and a family to return to.

I am from a tiny town 5 hours away from Lviv and 6 hours away from Kyiv, Ukraine’s actual capital. My mom, older brother, and me used to live together in one apartment. We care for each other deeply as we try to support each other both in happiness, and hardships at all times. So far, my favorite similarity between Ukraine and Korea is that people are polite and welcoming.

Truth be told, the atmosphere between Ukraine, and our unfriendly neighbor Russia has always been tense. For nearly 8 years now, Russia has been trying to occupy other Ukrainian territories, and just recently they started a full-scale war to try to achieve that. The first feeling that hit me when the war started was guilt.

Guilt for not being there with them, for not being able to support them to my best extent. I have not been able to sleep well, as I am always worried something terrible might happen while I am asleep. The first thing I do when I wake up is read the news to check the situation.

My family, and most of my friends remained in Ukraine. My hometown is relatively safe. Hence, friends that were staying in Kyiv, managed to evacuate to our hometown. So, knowing that people around the world support us is important for several reasons. First, because it boosts the morale and motivates the soldiers who are fighting for peace in Ukraine. Second, it keeps the conversation alive, and it pushes it forward; while the war is happening, people must not stop talking about it. Ukraine needs all the support it can get.

I'm from the central part of Ukraine. My hometown is Cherkasy, it’s three hours away from Kyiv. I became interested in Korea a long time ago because of Korean dramas and I was in general interested in Asian culture. But I decided to come here to study after working for a while (3,5 years) in the Polish branch of Korean company Samsung Electronics.

Russian propaganda has always been strong not only in Russian Federation itself but in Ukraine as well. There were several Russia oriented channels in Ukraine and some pro-Russian deputize the parliament and in local councils.

The main idea of the propaganda was to convince Ukrainians that Ukraine had never been a separate nation. A lot of people actually believed them to a certain extent.

Most Ukrainians have relatives or friends in Russia. In the first days after the invasion everybody called their Russian relatives and friends and tried to convince them to go to meetings against the war acquaintances were truly shocked with the reaction: nobody in Russia believes them. People in Russia say, “Don't worry, we will save you from Nazis”; or “Ukraine wanted to attack us, we had no choice.” So please, don't fall for fakes, think critically and check the information you receive.
